Ask about spending and verify sources in CleverNote Finance
This guide is for CleverNote Finance: transactions, budgets and goals. Explore the other blog
“How much did I spend this month?” is a starting point. Before using the answer for planning, check which records were included and whether they cover the whole period. Do this in CleverNote Finance.
Start with a period and a question
Ask a specific question such as “what were my grocery expenses in August?” It is easier to verify than “how are my finances?”
The result depends on recorded information. Missing receipts, unconnected accounts and pending entries can leave gaps. An app total does not automatically represent every dollar that left your accounts.
Check the records used
Open the transactions and sources shown in the answer. Check date, currency, amount, category and whether an entry is an expense, income or transfer. A credit card payment should not be confused with another purchase already recorded.
If a receipt and bank transaction appear to describe the same purchase, inspect them before removing anything. Equal amounts alone do not prove duplication.
Ask follow-up questions
After the summary, investigate:
- “Which transactions make up that amount?”
- “What was the largest expense in that period?”
- “Show the source for that entry.”
- “What about the previous month, using the same category?”
When comparing months, check that both have similar coverage. Correct extraction errors and repeat the query when needed.
Plan after reviewing
Use the checked history to discuss a budget or goal. Review the proposal yourself; a suggestion does not move money.
