Understand spending changes and find the receipt behind a purchase

Knowing that spending went up is useful. Seeing which categories and entries explain the difference makes it easier to decide what to review.

CleverNote Finance now connects those numbers to their sources more clearly: a spending explanation on Home, receipt links that survive reconciliation, a review of higher recurring charges, and an optional extension to the weekly payment summary.

What changed in spending

Open What changed in spending in your monthly card. You can compare recorded totals, see each category’s contribution to the difference, and expand a category to inspect its largest entries across both periods, including dates, merchants, and amounts.

An ongoing month is compared with the same part of the previous month. Each comparison uses one currency and follows the existing Finance rules for transfers, investments, and identified reversals.

For example, if restaurant spending moved from CA$200 to CA$260, that explains CA$60 of the difference. It does not prove that restaurant prices went up: the number of purchases and the available records can change too. These figures are illustrative.

The explanation appears when enough entries and history are available. It builds on the monthly difference and category pace already in the app.

Receipts stay with the reconciled purchase

When a note and a bank transaction describe the same purchase, the bank entry can remain the financial record while the note stays linked as its supporting document. New reconciliations preserve this connection when you accept a duplicate suggestion, merge entries manually, or an eligible exact duplicate is reconciled during bank sync.

Open the entry’s adjustment screen to find Linked receipts. You can open the original note, search your saved notes to link another document, or unlink a document.

Linking or unlinking does not change the transaction amount. If the same purchase has two entries, use reconciliation to keep one. Unlinking a receipt does not undo a completed reconciliation, and reprocessing the same reconciled source respects that decision.

Deleting a note removes access to its document without deleting an independent bank transaction. Older reconciliations that already lost their source association may need a manual link.

Has a recurring charge increased?

Recurring payment tracking and upcoming payments were already available. The addition is a specific review for a sustained change in amount: higher recent charges following a stable history.

In Upcoming payments, Review higher charges shows the amounts being compared and the supporting charges. Where applicable, it also estimates the difference over 12 months if the new amount continues.

One unusually high charge is not enough. CleverNote requires repeated, stable amounts, avoids treating ordinary fluctuations as increases, and lets you dismiss a comparison once reviewed. You can still correct the recurring payment in Patterns.

The notice asks you to check the evidence. A plan change, seasonality, or incomplete data may explain the difference. It does not establish a permanent price increase, an unused subscription, or a cancellation.

More context in your weekly summary, if you want it

The existing upcoming payment summary remains optional. A new account alert setting can add spending from the last seven days, a comparison with the previous seven days, and higher charges you have not reviewed.

This expanded account summary may arrive in a week without upcoming payments when there is relevant content. Enable weekly summaries, email, and the option to include spending and higher charges to receive it. Expanded content starts switched off.

The aim is one message connecting what happened with what is coming next, with the underlying records available to check in the app.
