Find a type of note with category and tag filters

You remember saving a planning note, but the same subject also appears in meetings, references and reviews. Searching for the broad topic brings back too much. You need to separate one kind of record within that subject.

In the CleverNote Notes web library, choosing a category can reveal a second row with tags from the loaded notes in that category. It lets you narrow the list without moving notes or building a new stack. Start by looking at the options that exist in your content.

Start with a category that makes sense

On the web, open Notes. To try the filter without mixing criteria, leave the search field empty and exit any note selection. Choose one of the categories shown above the list.

The names depend on the notes you already have. This guide does not provide a fixed list of types to look for. A category selects a broad set; a tag, when available below it, narrows that set.

Consider a fictional example: several notes belong to a “Meetings” category. Some have the tag “planning”, others “review”, and others cover different contexts. If those options appear in your library, choosing “Meetings” and then “planning” helps you find that subset.

These example names are not required product buttons. Use a category and a tag that actually appear on your screen.

Choose a tag and check the note

With a category selected, look for a row of tags just below it. Click one. The selected tag is highlighted and shows an ×, indicating that you can remove that filter.

The list now combines the selected category and tag. Open a candidate note and read its content to confirm what it records. A label can help you find a note, but it does not replace reading the decision, request or original reference.

In the fictional example, “planning” might lead to a preparatory conversation that does not contain the final decision. Check the text before using that note to answer “what did we agree on?”. Broaden the selection if you need another reference.

This filter changes the view. It does not move notes between stacks or change their saved category or tags.

Remove one criterion at a time

Click the active tag again to remove it. The category stays selected, so you can compare the other notes on that subject or choose another available tag.

Changing categories clears the selected tag. To leave the category filter, choose All. This gives you a fresh starting point when you are unsure how the note was classified.

If you also entered text in the search field, check that text too. Category, tag and search words can restrict what appears at the same time. When the result seems too narrow, remove the criterion you are least sure about first.

What if the tag row is missing?

The options come from notes already loaded on the screen, rather than a complete count of the library. The row appears only when repeated tags help separate notes within that category. A rare tag, or a tag present in every note in the loaded set, may not appear as an option.

A missing tag therefore does not prove that a note has disappeared. You do not need to create extra notes to make the filter appear either. Remove the category and search with the context you remember: a project name, a phrase from the conversation or the question behind the record.

The semantic search guide explains how to search by meaning when you lack the exact words. The meeting notes guide helps you record context you can recognize later.

Use the filter as a path to the source

Category and tag are useful clues when you recognize the options. When you do not, a broader search may be more useful. Finding a helpful note ends with opening and checking its content, rather than treating its label as a guarantee.

Open CleverNote Notes, choose an available category and try a tag. If that selection does not help, clear the filter and search by context.
